THE STORY
The West Oakland district lies on the bay's waterfront in the northwest corner of Oakland’s city limits. Dubbed the Harlem of the West, the neighborhoods within West Oakland have been shaped by the jazz age of the mid twentieth century. West Oakland was also home to the Black Panthers, a civil servant group that grew out of the defense against urban renewal. The Black Panthers were known for handing out free meals and taking on civil projects to better the West Oakland community.
